365 Things I Love About Camp #258

#258. I love the moss that grows in the Whiteshell!

It is the softest stuff ever! I love jumping on it and feeling how springy it is. It grows everywhere out here, including camp, but Jeremy doesn’t believe us when we tell him that. He says this post is cheating because I took this picture at Look Out, and moss is not a camp thing. He says he will start writing “365 Ways Kendra Cheated.” But it does grow here, and hopefully someday, he will also experience the pleasure of bouncing on it, on his way to Echo Valley.

365 Things I Love About Camp #256

#256. We love Andrew!

Andrew has been hired on for the winter, to help out with any extra maintenance, kitchen or program stuff that needs to be done. He’s moved into the duplex as Matt’s roommate, and they have got an impressive guitar collection going on over on their side. My favorite things about Andrew are:

1)      He is always smiling, even after he’s been raking leaves for days and days…

2)      He always greets Anika so cheerfully every time she opens our door to see who’s come into the duplex.

3)      He is a very hard worker.

4)      He talks about fairies very seriously with Anika.

5)      He has such a sincere desire to grow and change, and to become better at all that he does.

6)      He has such a great attitude and enthusiasm about everything.

365 Things I Love About Camp #255

#255. I love December at camp!

I love being out here at Christmas time. It looks like a Christmas card outside, and is so incredibly beautiful. And I love all of the activities – the Christmas program in Rennie, our full time staff Christmas party, the board/staff Christmas banquet, and just being at home as a family.

365 Things I Love About Camp#254

#254. I love November at camp!

November is SLOW around here! We only have one group here this month. It’s too cold to do summer activities, and there’s not enough snow to do winter activities, so November is when we have time to get ready for the winter season. I love how things are always changing at camp – it’s great having lots of people here, but it’s also good to have a slower time of the year. And then just around the time when we start to get a little bored, it’s time for groups to come again! But for now, this is the time to catch up on work, projects, family time, and days off. I tried to find a picture of life at camp in November, but I don’t have any. Ben says it’s because nothing happens here in November. So here’s a picture of what we do (or what we wish we were doing!) in the off season!

Some suggested sites for parents:

So I’ve decided that it would be a good idea to have a post now and then written for specific people. So this post is for anyone who is a parent, and needs some good web resources on youth, culture, and stuff like that. Feel free to add more great suggestions in the comments!

www.cpyu.org –  It stands for the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding. I’ve used this one for years, especially when I was a youth pastor. It gives great articles, studies, statistics, and links to relevant websites for anyone to help understand young people. Check it out!

Preview Online –  A Christian moview review site that I’ve used for years. While I don’t always aggree with the critics, they give detailed descriptions of almost all the new movies that come out. Parents…scratch that…everyone should know what they are getting themselves into before they go and watch a movie. A great place to get a take on the moral and spiritual content, while also getting a critic’s take on the entertainment value.

Pluggedinonline.com –  Another Christian website that looks at all parts of the entertainment industry. There are write-ups on movies, television, music, and games. I tend to think the movie section is done the best, but you can find some good stuff throughout the site.

Relevant magazine -  I haven’t used this site much, but they do have some good stuff on youth culture. This site is geared more towards the College and Career type age bracket, but is still applicable to teens.

Also, if you’re interested in finding out other websites and blogs I visit to stay educated, informed, and entertained, check out my post called Some of the blogs I view.

Have a great day!

365 Things I Love About Camp #253

#253. I love October at camp!
Fall is so incredibly beautiful in the Whiteshell. October is easy to love out here because it means walks in the fall sunshine, endless amounts of beautiful, colorful leaves, and an extra-blue sky. The lake looks amazing when it’s surrounded by all of the colorful trees.

365 Things I Love About Camp #252

#252. I love September at camp!

As much as I love summer, I also like the change of pace in fall. In September, we get back to our schedule of school groups Wednesday to Friday, and retreats on the weekends. It’s a time when the full time staff have time to connect again after a busy summer. There’s no way that we could keep up the pace of summer all year, so September comes at the perfect time to save us from burn-out!

THE WINNER

So if you haven’t been reading the blog, I had posted a vote for readers to vote on here. We collected over 30 votes, and the winner ended up being…(insert drumroll)…

OPTION #1 by HALI DIRKS!

Hali has won a brand new RRBC t-shirt. Congratulations!

Hali, let me know how I’ll get that out to you. Perhaps I’ll give it to Kim and he can wrap it and bring it to a Christmas gathering!

365 Things I Love About Camp #251

#252. I loved Anika’s camp birthday party!

We had such a good time, and I love it that there are so many amazing people in Anika’s life. She loved having everyone there to play games, open presents, and eat hotdogs and cupcakes.

#250. I love August at camp!

Things are still great at camp in August, because there’s another month of summer left, but it feels kind of bittersweet. Everyone knows that the end is coming really fast. The days are still warm, but the nights are cold, and camp just smells different in August! Fortunately, CIT happens during the last 2 weeks of August, so we have something fantastic to look forward to during this month! I find myself trying to soak everything in, and enjoy it as much as possible while it lasts.

365 Things I Love About Camp #249

#249. I love July at camp!

I really, really love July! If I had to pick a favorite month at camp, it might be July. Tied with May? I’m not sure. That’s a hard one. I love July, because it’s the beginning of summer, and it’s such an exciting time. I love staff camp, having all the summer staff here, having chapel every day, and everything else that’s amazing about camp. Summer feels fresh, and we’re just getting started. Everyone’s excited about the beginning of camp, and it’s a time of lots of energy.

365 Things I Love About Camp #248

#248. I love it that Jordan and Amber are engaged!

They’ve kind of become the poster couple around here for what a happy, healthy camp relationship can look like! Jordan and Amber’s engagement brings joy to my heart for a few different reasons – the first being that I am just so happy for them! But I also love it because we’ve been able to watch them grow and mature, and work so hard at their relationship to make it what it is today. I admire the way that they’ve worked at learning to serve here at camp while trying to maintain a healthy relationship, and have made personal sacrifices so that God can use them to bless others. I love it that they have such a desire to help other dating couples learn how to honor God with their relationships. I admire the way that they have asked for advice, have never avoided talking about the hard stuff, and have constantly desired to improve their relationship.

We wish them tons of happiness!

Fall Pictures

Hey all, I figured I would share some of the pictures I’ve been taking around camp this fall.  It is really an amazing time of year out in the whiteshell, I wish it would last longer, but the best time is really only a couple weeks at most.
